NASA Ames
In response to a challenge from NASA to propose a design for freeway advertising signage that "only NASA would do", this competition-winning proposal shows a two-sided LED sign "in orbit" and captured by two sweeping tubular steel arcs.
The arches of this composition are to be constructed of painted steel sections assembled in curve and structurally joined at key points. At the apex of their respective curves the arches are joined by a structural beam, which serves as an attachment point for the cabinets of the LED screens. The screens, gently curved in plan, are mounted flush on a clad cabinet and separated by a working area wrapped in translucent glazing and screen. The result is a jewel-like cabinet supported on sweeping arches, rising above the freeway.
